The Time-Flying Tippler Pigeon Sport

  • by: John T. Curley
Click for large image

I was surprised to find that such a small but definitive book about the history, sport and management techniques of these athletic birds was published in New York, rather than England. But here it is, and John Curley clearly knows his stuff. He doesn't belabor or embellish his points, which are how he keeps this book down to about 65 pages, but still finds space for some great photographs and a nice section on loft design that includes line drawings. If not a book for all pigeon fancier historians, it certainly belongs in the library of those in the sport. Published in 1961.

$75 Excellent hardback nearly mint, except for its age. #1

Racing Pigeons

  • by Paul Aston
Cover, click for larger image This near mint, has the school library stamp, is a picture reading book about the sport for those just learning to read, or to be read to someone of near that age. It is a picture book really, so those who can not yet read can follow along quite easily. It is not large at just 16 pages.but covers the main points. It starts out with Dad and Jo, oh yes a girl, building the new loft for her homers. She trains them and learns how to protect them from common neighborhood predators. She learns to use the clock as her first bird comes home from the 100 mile race. I remember it well.
$14 Excellent condition, only the school stamp gives it away from not being new.

The American Pigeon Journal 1943: Entire year hardbound

These issues were hardbound by the Department of Agriculture. Since they were owned by the Department they were always stored correctly and are in about as good a condition as one could expect for these issues from an age standpoint. However, the Department needed to stamp in each issue as it arrived and unfortunately the front cover was used. Each individual cover can be seen on the APJ page. There are also a few pages torn by over exuberant readers that have been repaired with some sort of tape. If you are willing to bet that it is Patton decorating a "pigeon" soldier on the November cover, you would win.

Pigeons: by W. B. Tegetmeier, illustrated by Harrison Weir
Cover, click for larger image Cover, click for larger image Cover, click for larger image Cover, click for larger image Both of these copies are really in very nice condition. Pigeons by Tegetmeier is the classic color illustrated work being printed in London in 1868. It includes 16 color engravings by Weir of several of the breeds highlighted in the book and as many wood engravings as well, although the artist of the wood engravings is not noted. The color engravings are without a doubt what set this work out from earlier works. It may indeed be the first work devoted to pigeons that included color engravings. This particular issue has been professionally rebound, and is in very good condition with only very minor foxing here and there.

This copy still has the original stamped covers that are in very nice condition for its age with the exception of the rather heavy bumping on the lower left corners. Also as you can see from the enlargement of the pouter plate as well, there is quite a bit of foxing on that plate, that extends to the first few pages. After that the text and plates are virtually fox free. There is a tear, that has been taped, on one of the tissue papers, separating the colored plates from the printed pages.

As you can see from the the larger scans, all the plates are in pretty decent shape with very little foxing, with the exception of the Pouter print. Someone has carefully cut is out from its original page and pasted it on the blank page. You will notice that there is no background picture.
If it was to be rebound a loose plate would have to be obtained to replace this one. The cover is also very worn with the bottom edge cloth nearly worn off. However, this is a very economic alternative for someone who can acquire the damaged plate and have it rebound.
